Today the phone rang. I jumped up and cleared my throat, thinking maybe this phone call would be a certain one that I have been waiting/hoping for. I checked the caller ID - not a name I recognized. Still, this could be my important call. I answer the phone with the nicest voice I can muster. "Hello?"
"Hi mom!!" is the reply.
Am I missing something? I know it's impossible to tell for sure, but this man had the voice of at least a middle aged person, maybe older (and it depends how you define middle age). As far as I know, I am 26. Definitely not old enough to have mothered a child back in the 1960's. Or even 70's. Or 80's. Even if I was...I certainly don't remember birthing a male child at any point in my life.
After a confused pause, I finally say "I'm sorry, you must have the wrong number".
The man on the other end lets out an embarrassed sounding laugh and apologizes, then promptly hangs up.
So what I learned today: Apparently when I try my hardest to sound "nice", I instead sound like a grandmother. Awesome.
